Reading/Workshop of Myra Sito Velasquez’s “The Soldier”, Co-Hosted by the AAFilmLab

The AAFilmLab would like to invite you to a Reading/Workshop of Myra Sito Velasquez’s THE SOLDIER, a black comedy set in 1930’s Japanese military bootcamp, to take place on Wednesday, Nov. 17th from 6PM to 9PM, Co-Hosted by the AAFilmLab

The AAFilmLab will be co-hosting a free reading to workshop “The Soldier” by Myra Sito Velasquez, a finished screenplay in the midst of transformation into a multi-media theatre piece.  There will be audience feedback/Q&A, and reception.

Wednesday, November 17th
Doors Open 6PM
Reading begins PROMPTLY at 6:30PM

The reading is approx. 1 hr 20 mins.  FREE admission including reception, wine, beer and tasty bites!

THE SOLDIER was originally conceived as a feature screenplay—@ 60 pages—Myra now plans to transform it into a powerful multi-media theatre piece.  This public reading is her first step towards making this happen.  Like our regular “Unfinished Works” Meetings, we will be workshopping this piece with audience feedback, and Q&A.

With the assistance of Wayne Chang of WC Casting, Myra has brought together a group of talented cast: Sandi Carroll, Ai Kiyono, Yoshiro Kono, Whitney Kam Lee,  Jan Mizushima, Jun Naito, Koji Nishiyama, Eileen Rivera, David Shih, and Brian Walters.

A Call For “Unfinished Works”
We are continuing going back to our roots with our original workshop format.  It’s an opportunity for us to help challenge and improve each other’s work, grow as a filmmakers and strengthen the bonds between us.  It’s a great way of progressing by problem solving while building community.  So, if you have an unfinished work, please bring it in to workshop!

We are still seeking “Unfinished Works” to workshop including, but not limited to:
1. Screenplays
2. Films in pre/post production
3. Acting monologues
4. Storyboarding, art direction including set, lighting, costume designs, sound design (including music) and editing choices, a specific scene challenge…basically any thing that isn’t complete that you need an outside perspective on to help you complete your vision.

To submit an “Unfinished Work,” please email (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with “Unfinished Work” in the subject line, including a description of your project (including format, length, what stage it’s in, & your projected goals for it) as well as the feedback your are seeking.

Asian American International Film Festival! In its 34th year, the AAIFF
continues its mission of promoting and presenting works by artists of Asian
descent of all nationalities.

We are now accepting works produced, directed, or written by artists of
Asian descent of any nationality, or about the Asian community for the
following categories: short films, feature films, youth-produced/directed
films, music videos, and works-in-progress.

Afterward, join filmmaker Jeff Sousa and playwright Feingold for a discussion on the connection between theater and film in Japan, led by Kyoko Hirano, film curator of the Japan Society 1986-2004 and current adjunct and research fellow at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto.
