Paul Brunick of The New York Times praises IN THE FAMILY: “A remarkably fresh and unpredictable drama…Beautifully modulated and stylistically sui generis, IN THE FAMILY is also one of the most accomplished and undersold directorial debuts this year… One senses that [Wang] is rediscovering the rules of cinema on his own. This is a career to keep an eye on.” (Full review at http://movies.nytimes.com/2011/11/04/movies/in-the-family-from-patrick-wang-review.html )

Synopsis from official site, www.inthefamilythemovie.com:

In the town of Martin, Tennessee, Chip Hines, a precocious six year old, has only known life with his two dads, Cody and Joey. And a good life it is. When Cody dies suddenly in a car accident, Joey and Chip struggle to find their footing again. Just as they begin to, Cody’s will reveals that he named his sister as Chip’s guardian. The years of Joey’s acceptance into the family unravel as Chip is taken away from him. In his now solitary home life, Joey searches for a solution. The law is not on his side, but friends are. Armed with their comfort and inspired by memories of Cody, Joey finds a path to peace with the family and closer to his son.

LU CHUAN’S MASTERFUL EPIC “CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH” OPENS ON MAY 11

LU CHUAN’S MASTERFUL EPIC “CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH” OPENS ON MAY 11

On December 9, 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army laid siege to the Chinese capital of Nanking, beginning a reign of terror that killed as many as 300,000 civilians—an infamous tragedy now referred to as the Rape of Nanking. The first big-budget fiction film by the Chinese to deal with this seminal event in their modern history, CITY OF LIFE AND DEATH follows those caught in the crossfire: a young Chinese general who leads a platoon in street fighting; the German businessman John Rabe, who establishes a safety zone to protect the lives of countless Chinese; and a Japanese officer conflicted by the brutality of his commander. A runaway hit with audiences in China, the film is a visceral, heartbreaking portrait of life during wartime, and an unforgettable masterpiece of contemporary world cinema.
